The Teaching Ministry of Geoff Volker
A NEW IS BLOG FROM GEOFF VOLKER
Biblical law ALWAYS has the SAME Purpose
When we compare the Old and New Covenants we are also comparing two different versions of God’s law. The law of the Old Covenant is the Mosaic law and the Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:27-28, Nehemiah 8:1). The law of the New Covenant is the law of Christ (1 Corinthians 9:19-21). Even though both versions of the law of God are different from each other they both do the same things.
For both the believer and the unbeliever law shows us our sin (1 John 3:4). For the unbeliever the law is condemning (Romans 6:23, Deuteronomy 28:15-45). For the believer the law tells him how he is to show his love for God (1 John 5:3). In the Old Covenant era God was emphasizing law as it relates to unbelievers, since Israel was a temporary, unbelieving picture of the people of God (Romans 9:30-10:4, Hebrews 8:7-13). In the New Covenant era God was emphasizing law as it relates to believers (1 John 2:3-6). But, in both the Old and New Covenant eras law functioned identically. In the Old Covenant era David tells us that for him, a believer, his keeping of the Mosaic law was out of law for his God (Psalm 119:97ˆ). In the New Covenant era the law of Christ was condemning for those who were not believers (Romans 6:23).
So… in both eras law does the same thing. The only difference is that our God is primarily focusing on unbelievers in the Old Covenant era and believers in the New Covenant era. It could be said that each Covenant era has a different flavor of law.
PERSONAL NEWS
From April 23-25 I and the other elders of NCBF attended the Bunyan Conference in Lewisburg, PA. One of the speakers was Tom Schreiner, professor at the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, KY. This was a gathering of NCT guys and it was a worthwhile time of learning and fellowship. Meeting with the guys at the motel during the early morning hours and the late night gatherings proved to be remarkable opportunities for fellowship and encouragement. But, the highlight for me was the time that I was able to spend with my fellow elders Paul Honeycutt and Jason Bearce. Our time together was invaluable.
PRAYER REQUEST FOR TRIP TO MINSK, BELARUS
I am seeking to raise the funds to return to Minsk, Belarus in the fall. I have been going to Minsk, Belarus since 1995. Lord willing, I would like to continue this ministry. I need to raise $3,000 for me to go. The cost includes $1,000 to pay for the conference and expenses such as a translator and transportation. If you should wish to help out with this make out your check to “IDS” or “In-Depth Studies” and designate your gift for “Minsk.”

READING FORUM
SPURGEON & HYPER-CALVINISM, by Iain Murray, published by Banner of Truth, 1995, 164 pages, paperback.
This short book addresses Spurgeon’s battle with true hyper-calvinism. Although he held to the doctrines of grace Spurgeon was biblically balanced in his teaching and refused to go farther than the Scripture is willing to go. This book serves as a great caution to beware of the danger of true hyper-calvinisim.

MEETING ONE ON ONE WITH GEOFF
One of the most effective forms of ministry that I do is to meet with guys one on one. It is in this setting that I can tailor what we study to meet the needs of the one I am meeting with. If this appeals to you all you have to do is to let me know that you want to meet together. It can be a one-time meeting or an on-going commitment. In light of full disclosure you ought to know that I benefit more from these meetings than the person I am meeting with.

A NEW IS BLOG FROM GEOFF VOLKER
Does the Church Replace Israel? (Part 6)
Now let us examine the priesthood of Israel. The key section of Scripture on this subject is found in Hebrews 7:11-28. In this portion of Scripture the author of Hebrews is making the case that the priesthood of the Old Covenant did not do anything. By that I mean that the sacrifices prescribed by the Mosaic Law could not take away sins. They only made the Israelites ceremonially clean. This means that the sacrifices of the Old Covenant era only brought the Israelite into good standing with the nation of Israel and not with the God of Israel.
If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the law was given to the people), why was there still need for another priest to come—one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron? (Hebrews 7:11 NIV)
The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. (Hebrews 9:13 NIV)
But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. (Hebrews 10:3-4 NIV)
The priesthood of the Old Covenant functioned only as a picture and not the real thing. As a priesthood it prefigured the coming priesthood of Jesus which is called the Melchizedek priesthood.
For it is declared: “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”
(Hebrews 7:17 NIV)
Of the priesthood of Jesus the author of Hebrews says that this priesthood actually accomplishes the saving of a people by the death of Jesus on the cross, which is the work of a priest who offers up a sacrifice, in this case his own death, for all those for whom he represented, in this case all those whom the Father chose to save.
Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. (Hebrews 7:23-25 NIV)
With the coming of Jesus the priesthood of Jesus took that place of the priesthood of the Old Covenant. His priesthood purchased a people who are also described as being a part of his priesthood.
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. (1 Peter 2:9-10 NIV)
In the New Covenant the work of Jesus as our high priest secured our salvation by his death on the cross and purchased for us an eternal priesthood. This means that we now become the real people of God, eternally forgiven, unlike Israel who are only a picture of the people of God. The priesthood of the Old Covenant could not produce a real people of God because it could not take away sins. It is only the priesthood of the New Covenant that truly pays the penalty for the sin for all for whom it was intended. The church does replace Israel for it is only the church that has experiences the satisfying of the wrath of God. The church is the true Israel of God.

A NEW IS BLOG FROM GEOFF VOLKER
Does the Church Replace Israel? (Part 5)
In Genesis 15:18-21 a very specific land promise was given to Abraham and to his seed, which is Israel. Those brothers who embrace the dispensational point of view would say that Israel has never truly been given those exact dimensions as described in Genesis 15 and therefore the promise of the land for Israel is awaiting a future fulfillment. According to the dispensational understanding this fulfillment will take place during the 7-year tribulation period at the end.
I would wholeheartedly agree that the exact land promise to Abraham and Israel has not been literally fulfilled. But, I will make the case that this promise to Israel was never meant to be fulfilled literally. Let us begin by surveying what the Lord says about his promise to give Israel the promise land in the book of Joshua.
As the LORD commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did it; he left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses. So Joshua took the entire land: the hill country, all the Negev, the whole region of Goshen, the western foothills, the Arabah and the mountains of Israel with their foothills, from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, to Baal Gad in the Valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon.
(Joshua 11:15-17 NIV)
So Joshua took the entire land, just as the LORD had directed Moses, and he gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal divisions. (Joshua 11:23 NIV)
These statements seem to be quite clear. It says that Joshua took the entire land. The problem is that in Joshua 13 there is a list of the portions of land that are still to be taken.
When Joshua was old and well advanced in years, the LORD said to him, “You are very old, and there are still large areas of land to be taken over. (Joshua 13:1 NIV)
Once again towards the end of Joshua we find it stated that the promise of the land to Israel was fulfilled at the time of Joshua.
So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their forefathers, and they took possession of it and settled there. The Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their forefathers. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the LORD handed all their enemies over to them. Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled. (Joshua 21:43-45 NIV)
Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the LORD your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed. (Joshua 23:14 NIV)
In light of the above scripture is would seem to be clear that God views the promise of the land to Israel as being fulfilled. His intent in giving the promise was not to have it literally fulfilled. Almost was good enough. If God says they took possession of the entire land then that fulfills the promise and ends the argument.
This side of Pentecost, in the New Covenant era, the promise of entering the land is understood as referring to being with the Lord forever in a land that does not end.
For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.
(Hebrews 4:8-11 NIV)
In the book of Hebrews professed believers who are Jewish are in danger after prolonged persecution of not persevering in their faith. If believers do not persevere then they will not enter the promised rest that was given to Israel in picture form. The true rest is not Palestine but heaven and the new heavens and earth where believers will join God in his rest. The literal promise of the land given to unbelieving Israel was only a temporary picture of a land that is given to the true spiritual Israel.
If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.
(Galatians 3:29 NIV)
Believers in Jesus Christ, the true Israel of God, are the real children of Abraham. Israel was a temporary unbelieving physical picture. The land promise of Palestine given to Abraham and then to Israel was a temporary picture of a land that all believers will enter after they die. This land will last forever and we will be with our Lord in perfect unending fellowship.
So, does the church replace Israel? Yes it does. For this can be seen in the biblical use of the land promise to Abraham and Israel. Yes Israel did receive the land promise, but that was only a temporary picture of a land promise that was given to the real people of God, the church. The true land promise that is given to the church is all about a land that will not end.
LIVING THE ADVENTURE OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE
The IDS Bank Account
I began to raise support for what has become In-Depth Studies in 1984. It has been a wild ride but I wouldn’t change it for the world. Currently our bank account, after I am paid this month, will show a decreasing balance of about $9,000. Without a change of financial direction in the upcoming months I will be forced to seek outside employment. When I say outside employment I am only saying that the Lord will be forcing me to move in another direction. I do not know what will happen, but that is okay. The economy is difficult and my support has reflected it. So, this is not a time for the wringing of hands but a time to pray and to be responsible to make the need known. I would especially ask you to pray for wisdom for me during this interesting time of life. I do want to honor my Lord whatever may happen. I do believe with all my heart that whatever He does is right (Romans 8:28). I should add that Priscilla, my rib, has been just the opposite of Job’s wife. She encourages me at every turn to look at everything from our God’s point of view and to respond accordingly. She is a very faithful partner. I just want to thank everyone for their constant support over the years and I pray that my Father will see fit to continue the work of In-Depth Studies since the opportunities for ministry seem to be ever growing.
THE LAST ONE TO BE WED
The Wedding of Geoff Jr. & Heather
On Sunday, March 4, at 4:00pm (Mountain Standard Time) our eldest son, Geoff Jr., was wed to Heather Marcus. Geoff is the last of our four children to be married. The wedding was wonderful and it brings to a close a segment of my married life with Priscilla that focused on caring for unmarried children. Now it is all about married couples and grandchildren. Heather is now our new daughter and she fits beautifully into the family. They will be living in an apartment only about 15 minutes from us in Gilbert, AZ. I had the privilege of marrying all four of our children and Priscilla and I conducted the pre-marital counseling for our kids as well. Our Father in heaven has been very kind to us in giving us such a family and we are very thankful for it.

REPORT FROM TRIP TO EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA
The bulk of my time in Greenville, NC was taken up with teaching the leadership and folks of Integrity Church. During a number of afternoons I worked with the leadership regarding New Covenant Theology and then in the evenings I worked with the folks regarding “How to Find God’s will.” I hope these times were fruitful for those who attended as much as they were for me.
I also spoke to the Campus Crusade students at East Carolina University on the subject of the new heart as well as an examination of the deficiencies of the teaching of Campus Crusade on the filling of the Spirit. I also spent quality time with my good friends who are the directors of Campus Crusade at ECU (Brad Woodlief and Craig Morrisette).
After I was done teaching in Greenville I went to Raleigh and did a Saturday seminar on “The Struggle in the Life of the Believer” at the home of Steven and Renee Whitley. My relationship to those couples in the seminar goes back many years.
On Sunday afternoon I went to visit Mike and Sarah Robbins in southwest Raleigh. Sarah had just had a new baby boy (Ramsey) and Mike was recovering from a stomach bug. Mike and Sarah used to be part of our NCBF family in Phoenix. The fellowship was special even though it was not long in duration.
On Sunday evening I traveled to Greensboro and spoke at Shepherd’s Fellowship where my good friend Dustin Segers is one of the elders. I spoke on Romans 13 and the role of government in the life of the believer.
The trip was quite full but very satisfying. As always I enjoy my times of teaching, but it is the cultivating of the relationships that really make the trip worthwhile.

PRAYER REQUEST FOR TRIP TO MINSK, BELARUS
I am seeking to raise the funds to return to Minsk, Belarus at the end of August or the beginning of September.

AN INVITATION FOR AN EVENING OF THEOLOGY
I would be more than happy to come to your home to conduct an Evening of Theology on the topic of your choice. You choose the topic and who you want to invite, provide a little finger food and I will lead the evening discussion. If this appeals to you then just let me know by phone or by email. There is no cost involved to bring me to your place to conduct the Evening of Theology. This is a tool to affect your family and friends for the Kingdom of God. Consider having one of these gatherings. Please contact Geoff Volker (480-924-4290, geoff.volker@ids.org) to schedule an Evening of Theology.

Finally, you can give money by going to the IDS website (www.ids.org) and use the pay pal giving button. Please be aware that a portion of your gift through pay pal goes to pay pal. If you ever have questions regarding how we handle financial matters you only need to call or email me and I will answer all your questions.

The Teaching Ministry of Geoff Volker
IDS Newsletter, January 2012
The Teaching Ministry of Geoff Volker
I echo what the Apostle Paul says to the church in Ephesus, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” As Geoff puts it, “We have it all!” Not some blessings but every blessing. Its only my faulty perspective when I don’t see it as every blessing that God has given me. God has greatly blessed us this year again. What a joy it has been to be Geoff’s partner for over 37 years now and Mom to our 4 children, 3 spouses, and 5 grandchildren. I have been truly blessed both spiritually and physically.
I won’t bore you with too many details. Our most exciting news is that after praying for a wife for Geoffrey, the Lord has brought Heather into his life. We already love her! She is an assistant manager for an apartment complex in Gilbert. She loves the Lord and is learning to love her crazy new family. They will be married in March. Geoffrey continues to sell commercial insurance and is trying to build up his photography business.
Zachary and Staci bought their first home, which is located in Woodland Hills, CA. We celebrated both Thanksgiving and a day later Christmas as a family in their new home. It’s amazing that we could all stay there together which just shows how spacious it is. Now, if we continue to add more babies that could certainly pose a problem. Zachary is the lead animator for the new Call of Duty game. I guess a lot of people play the game, but I don’t have a clue of how it is played and am only thankful that it provides for his family. Staci has taken on the task of homeschooling Dakota this year and is finding it very challenging. I get to read over Skype with her every day which I love and look forward to. Hudson and Chase love having both a front and back yard to explore in. I only wish we lived closer to them.
Samantha is very busy caring for two babies now. She is a wonderful Mom and loving wife. Bradley is the computer guy for VirTra Systems. The company produces simulators to teach law enforcement how to use their weapons. Annabelle is never seen without her Dolly and Bryson is all smiles and crawling everywhere!
Debby and Matt are enjoying their new home and putting their own personal touches on it. Matt is almost finished with all his rotations at SRP and is looking for just the right division in which to settle. Debby has retired at the ripe old age of 27! She has lots of plans, like sewing, gardening, and raising chickens. They are both patiently waiting Gods perfect timing for children.
On December 2, my dear Mom went home to be with the Lord. What a privilege it was to be by her side when she left her earthly body and went to heaven for an eternity with her Lord and Savior that she loved so much. I grieve for my Dad as they had 63 years together, but I know the Lord will continue to be faithful to him since He is the God of all compassion and He will lovingly care for Daddy.
I would like to thank each and every one of you who are involved with IDS. Your support of this ministry whether by prayer or finances is such an encouragement to us. It is wonderful to have a hubby who loves the work that he does and never gets tired of it. I praise God every day for this ministry and pray that it encourages you to love your Lord more and to love others.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The begging portion of this newsletter
As always, financial support will not be refused if you should decide to give some to me. All you need to do is to make out a check to “IDS” and send it to the address of the ministry, IDS, 3324 E. Enid Ave., Mesa, AZ 85204-4836. You can also send a check through the online banking of your bank. Personally I have found this method to be the most convenient way to support other ministries. Finally, you can give money by going to the IDS website (www.ids.org) and use the pay pal giving button. Please be aware that a portion of your gift through pay pal goes to pay pal. If you ever have questions regarding how we handle financial matters you only need to call or email me and I will answer all your questions.
