The Teaching Ministry of Geoff Volker

September 2016

On Monday, August 29 I will be leaving for Romania and the Czech Republic.  I will be gone for 18 days and will return on Thursday, September 15. I would very much appreciate your prayers as I undertake this ministry. Please pray for the following requests.

  • That I would stay in good health throughout the trip.
  • That I would have opportunities to share the gospel as I travel to and from Europe.
  • That I would be sensitive to the needs of those around me and truly care for them.
  • That my attitude would honor the Lord when things do not seem to be going well.

  • A definition of saving faith that says that all you need to do in order to be saved is to believe that Jesus died for your sins is a false gospel.
  • Belief is described as repentance and faith.

I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus. (Acts 20:21, NIV 1984)

  • Saving faith always results in a life that desires obedience to God’s word.

Through him and for his name’s sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith. (Romans 1:5 NIV 1984)

  • A believer is described as someone who is a “slave to Christ.”

But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. (Romans 6:17-18, NIV 1984)

  • The concept that you can be a true believer and yet not desire to live for your Lord is a false and unbiblical concept.

No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; not is anyone who does not love his brother.

(1 John 3:9-10 NIV 1984)

  • True saving faith will always consist of trusting in Jesus Christ to pay for your sins by his suffering and death on the cross and desiring to follow him as the Lord of your life.
  • If one only embraces Jesus as his personal Savior then he will not be saved for this version of the gospel is a false gospel that can never save anyone.

Free Grace Theology: 5 Ways It Diminishes the Gospel, by Wayne Grudem, published by Crossway, 2016, paperback, 159 pages. Available from Amazon for $11.28.

This is an excellent book to understand the attempts by some teachers to redefine saving faith. Grudem very clearly explains from Scripture that true saving faith will always result in a changed life. You cannot become a believer by just embracing Christ as your Savior. You must also embrace him as the Lord of your life.

One Greater Than Moses, by Heather A. Kendall, published by Quoir, 2016, paperback, 192 pages. Available from Amazon for $19.99.

Here is an account of the recent history of New Covenant Theology. Heather Kendall gives you a good chronology of the development of NCT and the key players the God used. It is always good to know the history of your theological position.

Engaging with Keller, Edited by Iain D. Campbell and William M. Schweitzer, published by Evangelical Press Books, 2013, paperback, 240 pages. Available from Amazon for $15.99.

A group of conservative Presbyterians from the United Kingdom present some serious concerns regarding the teaching ministry of Tim Keller. The subject areas that are touched on are the definition of sin, the explanation of the trinity, the mission of the church and his handling of Scripture, particularly the parables.

What is the Biblical Understanding of Preaching and Teaching?

The discussion group is from 8:00am to 10:00am at the home of Geoff Volker. Trevor Brents is going to be leading this discussion. All are invited to be a part on this theological discussion. If you desire to attend please notify Geoff Volker (, 480.313.8558).

IDS Theological Discussion Group meets every other month on a Saturday morning at my place. The purpose of this group is two-fold.

#1  An opportunity for believers to be iron sharpening iron with one another so that we can make progress on our understanding of Scripture. Each meeting one individual leads an interactive discussion on a biblical topic that believers do not all agree on.

#2  To learn how to discuss biblical issues that we disagree on in a manner that honors the God of Scripture. 1 Corinthians 10:31

Picture/Fulfillment: A Study in New Covenant Theology

I am in the process of putting together a comprehensive book on New Covenant Theology. As I finish portions of the book I will be putting them out for your examination and comment. Please feel very free to comment on my writing and do not hesitate to criticize it. My desire is to have a book that is clear and comprehensive. I will begin sending out portions of the new book in June. Please send your comments to

I am currently working on one of the major sections that discusses the role of Israel in the plan of God. What I have written is now available for your comment on the IDS website. Please do not hesitate to give criticisms or suggestions. I am in need of your thoughts so that I can do a better job on this book. Go to and check out the “new book” section. Everyone who receives the IDS newsletter will also receive the new book portions, as they are available.

One of the most effective forms of ministry that I do is to meet with guys one on one. It is in this setting that I can tailor what we study to meet the needs of the one I am meeting with. If this appeals to you all you have to do is to let me know that you want to meet together. It can be a one-time meeting or an on-going commitment. In light of full disclosure you ought to know that I benefit more from these meetings than the person I am meeting with. Please contact me at 480-313-8558 or

The begging portion of this Newsletter

As always, financial support will not be refused if you should decide to give some to me. All you need to do is to make out a check to “IDS” and send it to the address of the ministry, IDS, PO Box 3482, Gilbert, AZ 85299. You can also send a check through the online banking of your bank. Personally I have found this method to be the most convenient way to support other ministries. Finally, you can give money by going to the IDS website ( and use the pay pal giving button. Please be aware that a portion of your gift through pay pal (2.5%) goes to pay pal. If you ever have questions regarding how we handle financial matters you only need to call or email me and I will answer all your questions.

The “New Covenant Confession of Faith” has been revised. Please check out this thorough confession of faith from the perspective of New Covenant Theology. We think that it is better than the original one. Look at it and give us your feedback. It would be greatly appreciated.
