The Teaching Ministry of Geoff Volker

October 2016

The trip to Romania came in two parts. First, I went to Comanesti. This is a town of about 15,000 folks that is located in northeast Romania just at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. Adrian Barzu is the pastor of the Baptist church in town and is a very dear friend as well as being a remarkable teacher. I have been coming to Comanesti since 2003. The conference was on “The Implications of New Covenant Theology.” The interaction was excellent and I thought that our time together was very profitable in the Lord.

Front and Center is Adrian Barzu, the pastor of the church.

On a Friday Adrian and I went south of Comanesti to the Gypsy Baptist Church in Targu Ocna. Every Friday the church feeds lunch to the poor. The pastors are well-grounded shepherds who hold to the Doctrines of Grace and New Covenant Theology. The lunch that was served was put together with great care and of course I sampled the cuisine. This was love in action.

On a Saturday I accompanied Adrian to a Northeast Romania Baptist Union Pastors Meeting. I taught at the meeting on Romans 8:28 and had a very positive response by the pastors. This was an opportunity to get to know some more pastors in the area.

On Sunday night I participated in an Open Forum with a number of couples from the church. It was a special time of fellowship with folks that I have known for a number of years.

An Evening of Fellowship and Discussion in Comanesti

When I finished my responsibilities in Comanesti I took the train south to Bucharest, the capital of Romania. I stayed at the home of Soterius and Julia Tataru and their family. They overwhelmed me with hospitality and even took me on an outing to the Black Sea. But the highlight of my stay with them was our late night discussions of biblical issues. In Bucharest I repeated the conference that was done in Comanesti. A source of encouragement was that those attending the conference were mostly young adults. Cristi Chivu and Corneliu Chiriluta did the interpreting.

The final stop on my trip was in the city of Prague in the Czech Republic. I normally stop here on my way home to spend time with Pavel and Klara Steiger. But this trip they were out of town and so I was able to spend my time there with Jarda Kernal, the pastor of the new Prague Bible Church. Our days were spent in constant theological discussion. We also managed to fit in a quick trip to Dresden, Germany that I thoroughly enjoyed. The chocolate shop was something to die for.

I am very thankful for privilege of going to these places and having the opportunities for ministry. It is a wonderful thing to be in God’s family.

I am trying to be a bit more responsible and save money on overseas trips. Therefore, I am seeking to raise the funds for the Belarus and Romania trips by appealing for the money this fall instead of waiting until sometime after January. As always, do not feel compelled to give. I am convinced that this is a worthwhile opportunity and am asking my Father in heaven to fulfill my request. But whatever happens his Sovereign Will is unfolding and it is motivated by his love for me and is for my good. Romans 8:28

People of God

  • Israel, under the Old Covenant, was a temporary, unbelieving picture of the people of God.

Romans 9:30-10:4, Romans 2:28-29, Hebrews 8:7-13

  • In the New Covenant era the people of God, the church, are those who profess to believe in Jesus as their Savior and Lord. Romans 3:21-31, Romans 6:15-23
  • Paul changes the definition of the people of God from being born into the nation of Israel to being born again into the real family of God. Romans 2:28-29
  • In the New Covenant era we do not call someone a believer, a member of the New Covenant, unless they are giving evidence of a changed life. Romans 8:1-2, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

What is the Biblical Understanding of Preaching and Teaching?

The discussion group is from 8:00am to 10:00am at the home of Geoff Volker. Trevor Brents is going to be leading this discussion. All are invited to be a part on this theological discussion. If you desire to attend please notify Geoff Volker (, 480.313.8558).

IDS Theological Discussion Group meets every other month on a Saturday morning at my place. The purpose of this group is two-fold.

#1  An opportunity for believers to be iron sharpening iron with one another so that we can make progress on our understanding of Scripture. Each meeting one individual leads an interactive discussion on a biblical topic that believers do not all agree on.

#2  To learn how to discuss biblical issues that we disagree on in a manner that honors the God of Scripture. 1 Corinthians 10:31

Picture/Fulfillment: A Study in New Covenant Theology

I am in the process of putting together a comprehensive book on New Covenant Theology. As I finish portions of the book I will be putting them out for your examination and comment. Please feel very free to comment on my writing and do not hesitate to criticize it. My desire is to have a book that is clear and comprehensive. I will begin sending out portions of the new book in June. Please send your comments to

I am currently working on one of the major sections that discusses the role of Israel in the plan of God. What I have written is now available for your comment on the IDS website. Please do not hesitate to give criticisms or suggestions. I am in need of your thoughts so that I can do a better job on this book. Go to and check out the “new book” section. Everyone who receives the IDS newsletter will also receive the new book portions, as they are available.

One of the most effective forms of ministry that I do is to meet with guys one on one. It is in this setting that I can tailor what we study to meet the needs of the one I am meeting with. If this appeals to you all you have to do is to let me know that you want to meet together. It can be a one-time meeting or an on-going commitment. In light of full disclosure you ought to know that I benefit more from these meetings than the person I am meeting with. Please contact me at 480-313-8558 or

The “New Covenant Confession of Faith” has been revised. Please check out this thorough confession of faith from the perspective of New Covenant Theology. We think that it is better than the original one. Look at it and give us your feedback. It would be greatly appreciated.
