The Teaching Ministry of Geoff Volker
IT IS A “BIT” OF A CRISIS
Yes it is the year-end financial appeal, but this year is a bit different. I am at a sort of crossroads as I must raise more support or this upcoming year could bring about some rather severe changes.
I have been raising support since 1984. First it was for Quo Vadis Books, then The Whitefield Society that went through a name change in the early 1990’s and became In-Depth Studies. It is amazing to see how the Lord has sustained my family and me all these years. So, here we are coming toward the end of another year. The good news is that the bank account of IDS is in the black. The not so good news is that the account is just in the black. In you are able to help with this with an end of the year gift or an increase in monthly support that would be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to do anything regarding this need that is also just fine. I myself am not always able to help others financially as I would like to do. But as I close this portion of the newsletter I want to say thank you for your past support and encouragement. It has been greatly appreciated. For my part I am excited about what the Lord has in store for the upcoming year. Opportunities for ministry seem to be ever growing. It is wonderful to be able to trust my Father in heaven with my future. He choreographs it for my good and his glory (Romans 8:28)
If you should decide to send some support here are the ways that it can be done:
- The old try and true method of a hand written check to the IDS address.
- Send a check through online banking to the IDS address.
- Use the PayPal option on the IDS website.
UNRAVELING A DIFFICULT BIBILICAL PHRASE
“released from the law”
In Romans 7:6 we are confronted by a difficult phrase that is commonly misunderstood. This phrase refers to the believer and states that he has been “released from the law.”
But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
(NIV, text edition of 1984)
- Paul is making the case that when someone becomes a believer he is no longer under the control of sin. He has ceased to be a slave to sin and has become a slave to righteousness.
- When an unbeliever is confronted by God’s law his rebellious heart is enflamed and as a result he sins even more. The historical example of this is unbelieving Israel when they were given the Ten Commandments and Mosaic Law on Mount Sinai. Romans 5:20
- To be “released from the law” refers to the believer who because he has a new heart and therefore is now a God-lover is no longer controlled by sin. When the believer is confronted by God’s law (in the New Covenant era the believer is under the law of Christ, a New Covenant era version of God’s law) the result is no longer an increase of sin. For the believer God’s law is what he chooses to do in order to show his love for his Lord. 1 John 5:2-4
- This is the result of the work of the Spirit in the believer’s life. The Holy Spirit causes the believer to live for the Lord. Romans 8:5-9
- It is the new heart in the believer that motivates the believer to have a life of obedience to the Word of God. Hebrew 8:10-11

THEOLOGICAL DISCUSSION GROUP
The Effects of Sin
IDS Theological Discussion Group meets every other month on a Saturday morning at my place. The purpose of this group is two-fold.
#1 An opportunity for believers to be iron sharpening iron with one another so that we can make progress on our understanding of Scripture. Each meeting one individual leads an interactive discussion on a biblical topic that believers do not all agree on.
#2 To learn how to discuss biblical issues that we disagree on in a manner that honors the God of Scripture. 1 Corinthians 10:31
Saturday, January 23
The discussion group is from 8:00am to 10:00am at the home of Geoff Volker. The issue to be discussed is “The Effects of Sin.” Geoff Volker is going to be leading this discussion. All are invited to be a part of this theological discussion. If you desire to attend please notify Geoff Volker (firstname.lastname@example.org, 480.313.8558).
Four Views on the Book of Revelation
(Published by Zondervan, 1998, 252 pages, paperback.)
4 different ways of handling the book of Revelation are presented (Preterist, Idealist (which is the Amil perspective), Progressive Dispensationalism, Classical Dispensationalism) and are then evaluated by the other perspectives. This is an excellent introduction to the book of Revelation.
The Reading Forum takes place from 8:00am to 10:00am on a Saturday at the home of Geoff Volker. Please contact Geoff if you have any questions (480-313-8558, email@example.com).

MORE OF THE NEW UPCOMING BOOK
Picture/Fulfillment: A Study in New Covenant Theology
I am in the process of putting together a comprehensive book on New Covenant Theology. As I finish portions of the book I will be putting them out for your examination and comment. Please feel very free to comment on my writing and do not hesitate to criticize it. My desire is to have a book that is clear and comprehensive. I will begin sending out portions of the new book in June. Please send your comments to firstname.lastname@example.org.
I am currently working on one of the major sections that discusses the role of Israel in the plan of God. What I have written is now available for your comment on the IDS website. Please do not hesitate to give criticisms or suggestions. I am in need of your thoughts so that I can do a better job on this book. Go to www.ids.org and check out the “new book” section. Everyone who receives the IDS newsletter will also receive the new book portions, as they are available.

AN INVITATION FOR AN EVENING OF THEOLOGY
I would be more than happy to come to your home to conduct an Evening of Theology on the topic of your choice. You choose the topic and who you want to invite, provide a little finger 2-6or by email. There is no cost involved to bring me to your place to conduct the Evening of Theology. This is a tool to affect your family and friends for the Kingdom of God. Consider having one of these gatherings. Please contact Geoff Volker (480-313-8558, email@example.com) to schedule an Evening of Theology.
MEETING ONE ON ONE WITH GEOFF
One of the most effective forms of ministry that I do is to meet with guys one on one. It is in this setting that I can tailor what we study to meet the needs of the one I am meeting with. If this appeals to you all you have to do is to let me know that you want to meet together. It can be a one-time meeting or an on-going commitment. In light of full disclosure you ought to know that I benefit more from these meetings than the person I am meeting with. Please contact me at
480-313-8558 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
The begging portion of this Newsletter
As always, financial support will not be refused if you should decide to give some to me. All you need to do is to make out a check to “IDS” and send it to the address of the ministry, IDS, 3324 E. Enid Ave., Mesa, AZ 85204-4836. You can also send a check through the online banking of your bank. Personally I have found this method to be the most convenient way to support other ministries. Finally, you can give money by going to the IDS website (www.ids.org) and use the pay pal giving button. Please be aware that a portion of your gift through pay pal (2.5%) goes to pay pal. If you ever have questions regarding how we handle financial matters you only need to call or email me and I will answer all your questions.
NEW COVENANT CONFESSION OF FAITH “REVISED”
The “New Covenant Confession of Faith” has been revised. Please check out this thorough confession of faith from the perspective of New Covenant Theology. We think that it is better than the original one. Look at it and give us your feedback. It would be greatly appreciated.
