Comment on Biblical Law ALWAYS has the SAME Purpose by admin

John, I too enjoyed our time together at the Bunyan Conference. My views on law have never changed. It just depends what questions you are asking. There is no emphasis on law in the New Covenant era since the basis of change is the new heart. But, once you have a new heart you still need to know how to show your love for God. The answer is that you must keep his commandments (1 John 5:3). So, the law of Christ, which is loving as Christ loved (John 13:34-35), eventually turns into specific laws that we are required to keep (1 John 3:4). I think that you must make a distinction between the discontinuity of the two covenants and the function of law in general. Bye the way, thanks for pointing out the correction. Geoff

Geoff: It was good to have the opportunity to be together again last week!

Here is a suggestion for an editorial correction to what you have posted above.
In the following sentence I think you need to replace the word "law" with "love" in the second occurrence, "In the Old Covenant era David tells us that for him, a believer, his keeping of the Mosaic law was out of law for his God (Psalm 119:97ˆ)."

Also, by way of comment or reaction, this post appears to express a degree of continuity between the covenantal "laws" that I don't remember picking up in your writings previously. Discontinuity seems to be quite minimized. Are you consciously moving in this direction, or is this just my perception, and not a shift in how you have expressed this relationship in the past?

Enjoyed the series on Romans 7. Lots of food for thought. Have not heard your viewpoint defended. Good job. Tom

Terence, your comment is appreciated. I was not intending to say that "all" email replies are a coward's way out. Obviously yours are not. But, I have experienced many emails that are. I just wanted to raise a caution in the use of email. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Geoff

quite on the contrary, i find e-mail a fantastic way to communicate, you can pause have a think and get everything perfect before firing off, where as on the phone your tongue can get out of sync with your brain and give a wrong impression. chow!

HI Geoff, I forgot how much I enjoyed your teaching and handling of God's Word. I know I'm out of sync with this particular lesson. I need to check out the other lessons. This is a good thing.
