The Teaching Ministry of Geoff Volker

August 2017

A CRITICAL POINT IN MY FINANCES

As of the end of July the amount of money that is in the IDS account is $3,493. It has never been this low since I started raising support in 1984. One-time gifts are welcome as always, but an increase in monthly gifts would be greatly appreciated. For those of you who are supporting monthly you might consider raising your monthly amount. I need to raise an additional $1,500 a month. I know that seems to be a large amount, but the Lord is quite able to meet the need. Our Lord is in control and his plan is right on schedule. Thank you for all your past support.

URGENT PRAYER REQUEST FOR BELARUS

  • Luda (Vladimir’s wife) is very weak and death is close at hand.
  • We would love to raise $10,000 to enable Vladimir to purchase a reliable used vehicle. If you would like to participate in this then make your donation to IDS and note that it is for “Vladimir’s Vehicle.” We have already raised about $3,000.

IDS Hour

We are currently in the midst of a series on “Covenants.” We are examining all that the Scripture has to say about covenants.

IMPLICATIONS OF NEW COVENANT THEOLOGY

Circumcision

  • Under the Abrahamic Covenant the male descendants of Abraham are to be circumcised on the 8th day. Genesis 17:9-14
  • Under the Mosaic Law every male infant is to be circumcised on the 8th day and this is the mark that they belong to Israel, the picture of the people of God. Leviticus 12:3
  • In the New Covenant era believers experience a spiritual circumcision, a circumcision done by Christ. This is referring to the new heart that causes them to believe the gospel message and be a God-lover. Colossians 2:11-12
  • Old Covenant circumcision was an external picture of New Covenant fulfillment.

MEETING ONE ON ONE WITH GEOFF

One of the most effective forms of ministry that I do is to meet with guys one on one. It is in this setting that I can tailor what we study to meet the needs of the one I am meeting with. If this appeals to you all you have to do is to let me know that you want to meet together. It can be a one-time meeting or an on-going commitment. In light of full disclosure you ought to know that I benefit more from these meetings than the person I am meeting with. Please contact me at 480-313-8558 or geoff.volker@ids.org.

Please be aware that a portion of your gift through pay pal (2.5%) goes to pay pal. UPDATE OF RECENT CONFERENCE IN STATE COLLEGE, PA

Going back to State College is returning to my university roots. I attended Penn State from 1968-72. This is the 2nd NCT Conference put on by Grace Fellowship of Boalsburg. Keith Doster is the pastor. Keith also heads up “Grace Deaf Missions.” The questions during the teaching times were excellent, the fellowship was special, and the singing of hymns written by David Gay was enjoyed by all.

A side benefit of this trip was the ability to spend time with some very old friends of mine, Chris and Wendy Devlin. I first met Chris at Penn State and we were a part of Campus Crusade for Christ. Chris was a football player who then played for the NFL with the Bengals and then the Bears. Chris is now a dentist in State College. Friendships in Jesus are very, very special. I am very thankful that the Lord allowed Priscilla and I to spend time with some very special friends.

URGENT PRAYER REQUEST FOR BELARUS

  • Luda Bukanov is now back in the hospital in Minsk with both cancer and heart issues and is not expected to return home.

IMPLICATIONS OF NEW COVENANT THEOLOGY

Gathering of Believers

  • In the Old Covenant era the nation of Israel was viewed as the people of God. There was no such thing as the church.
  • In the Old Covenant era the nation of Israel met together on various occasions but never functioned as the church. Exodus 23:14-19, Numbers 28:16-25
  • In the New Covenant believers are saved to be part of a local family of believers or church and they are commanded to meet together to encourage and build up each other. Hebrews 10:24-25
  • In the New Covenant era when believers meet together they are to bring something for the strengthening of the church. 1 Corinthians 14:26-28

REPORT ON THE BELARUS-CZECH REPUBLIC TRIP

I arrived in Minsk, Belarus on Wednesday, May 17. I was staying at the home of Vladimir Bukanov in Mixanavichi, one of the pastors of New Covenant Church in the village of Gatava. My time in Belarus was taken up with 2 conferences, individual meetings and bible studies. Anatoly Chukhalyonak, the other pastor in Gatava served as my translator. Anatoly is in the process of getting his seminary degree online and is also in the midst of having a home built in the village of Mixanavichi. The conference in Gatava was on the book of Romans while the other conference was in the west of Belarus at the Baptist Church in the city of Beroza. The subject of the conference was the Doctrines of Grace.

A look at the conference on the book of Romans at the church in Gatava

A photo op of some of the folks who took part in the conference on the Doctrines of Grace at the Baptist Church in Beroza.

On the way to Beroza we stopped at the city of Slonim to see two old friends, Maxim and Constantine. It was a wonderful time of renewing old friendships in the Lord. All of our times of fellowship on this trip to western Belarus were very special.

Constantine and Maxim, two brothers in the Lord who are seeking to establish a family of believers in Slonim, Belarus.

On a sad note, Luda, the wife of Vladimir, was diagnosed with 4th stage lung cancer as well as cancer in other parts of her body. She has received some chemotherapy but is in much pain. This has been a tremendous trial for Vladimir as he seeks to care for Luda and fulfill his duties in the church. Please pray for he and Luda.

Here I am at the hospital with Vladimir and Luda and two ladies from their church.

After my time in Belarus I flew to Prague, Czech Republic by way of Warsaw, Poland. The trip was easy but my bag decided to spend some extra time in Warsaw before it saw fit to join me in Prague. In Prague I met up with Pavel and Klara Steiger, long time missionaries who are very dear friends of mine. While in the Czech Republic we took a little trip to the village of Javornic on the far east of the country, just a few miles from the border of Slovakia. This village is over 650 years old. We came to the village to see Petr Kulik, the pastor of the Czech Brethren church that has existed in the village since the 1700’s. I met Petr at the NCT conference in London in March and gave a 2-hour interactive time of teaching on Israel. I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed my time with Petr and his folks. It was indeed a special time and only the beginning of a long-term relationship.

Petr, the pastor of the Czech Brethren Church in Javornic, Czech Republic. A faithful man of God who holds to the Doctrines of Grace and New Covenant Theology.

The inside of the Czech Brethren church in Javornic. Please note the pulpit.

I have been coming to Belarus since 1996. Thank you to all of you who have contributed your funds to make this trip possible. Lord willing, I shall return next year.

Prayer Requests for Belarus

  • Luda’s recovery from her cancer.
  • Strength for Vladimir to carry out his responsibilities during this very trying period.
  • Anatoly’s new home would be finished quickly so that he and his family can move in.
  • Please pray for Oleg, the former husband of Julia, Vladimir’s daughter, who has wandered from the faith.
  • Please pray for Julia and her husband Victor, Vladimir’s daughter and son-in-law, to become believers.
  • Please pray for Vova, Marina’s husband, Vladimir’s other son-in-law, to become a believer. He is showing signs of real interest in the Lord.

IMPLICATIONS OF NEW COVENANT THEOLOGY

Gifts of the Spirit

  • In the Old Covenant era the picture of the gifts of the Spirit can be seen in the equipping of the special men to build the intricate parts of the tabernacle. Exodus 35:30-36:1
  • In the Old Covenant era special men were equipped by the Holy Spirit to build the intricate parts of a physical tabernacle which functions as a picture of what the Holy Spirit is going to in equipping believers, in the New Covenant era, to build a spiritual building, the people of God.
  • The Holy Spirit used unbelieving Israelites to build parts of the tabernacle since Israel is only a temporary, unbelieving picture of the people of God. Romans 2:28-29, Galatians 4:21-31
  • In the New Covenant era the Holy Spirit gifts all believers so that they can help build up the body and meet its needs. 1 Corinthians 12, 1 Peter 4:10-11, Romans 12:3-8

MORE OF THE NEW UPCOMING BOOK

Picture/Fulfillment: A Study in New Covenant Theology

I am in the process of putting together a comprehensive book on New Covenant Theology. As I finish portions of the book I will be putting them out for your examination and comment. Please feel very free to comment on my writing and do not hesitate to criticize it. My desire is to have a book that is clear and comprehensive. I will begin sending out portions of the new book in June. Please send your comments to geoff.volker@ids.org.

I am currently working on one of the major sections that discusses the role of Israel in the plan of God. What I have written is now available for your comment on the IDS website. Please do not hesitate to give criticisms or suggestions. I am in need of your thoughts so that I can do a better job on this book. Go to www.ids.org and check out the “new book” section. Everyone who receives the IDS newsletter will also receive the new book portions, as they are available.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

The begging portion of this Newsletter

As always, financial support will not be refused if you should decide to give some to me. All you need to do is to make out a check to “IDS” and send it to the address of the ministry, IDS, PO Box 3482, Gilbert, AZ 85299. You can also send a check through the online banking of your bank. Personally I have found this method to be the most convenient way to support other ministries. Finally, you can give money by going to the IDS website (www.ids.org) and use the pay pal giving button. Please be aware that a portion of your gift through pay pal (2.5%) goes to pay pal. If you ever have questions regarding how we handle financial matters you only need to call or email me and I will answer all your questions.

Subject of the Colloquy

Is the cross alone sufficient for salvation?

In some theological circles it is taught that the cross does not fulfill all that is needed for our salvation. This colloquy will examine what is truly necessary for our justification. With that in mind we are going to have this theological conversation over the question, “Is the cross of Jesus all-sufficient to secure our salvation?

Conversation Participants

Dr. Brian Arnold, Assistant Professor of Theology and Church History at Phoenix Seminary

Brian takes the position that forgiveness of sins from the cross is not enough for our justification.

Geoff Volker, Director of In-Depth Studies

Geoff takes the position that forgiveness of sins from the cross is all we need for our justification.

THE THEOLOGICAL COLLOQUY WAS A “HAPPENING”!

On Saturday evening, April 29, a Theological Colloquy was held to discuss the issue of Justification. The point of disagreement centered on the question of what was needed by the work of Jesus Christ to be justified. Was the forgiveness that Jesus purchased on the cross for all those whom the Father chose to save sufficient for acceptance by the Father? Or, does one also need to have Jesus keep the law perfectly for us in order for us to be justified or accepted by the Father?

Dr. Brian Arnold, the Assistant Professor of Theology and Church History at Phoenix Seminary, defended the view that forgiveness is not enough for justification. One also needs the perfect law keeping of Jesus in order to be saved. Geoff Volker, the Director of In-Depth Studies, took the view that forgiveness of sins by the death of Jesus was all that was needed to be for one to be accepted by the Father or justified.

There were about 64 in attendance and it was a remarkable evening. Both Brian and Geoff began the evening by presenting their views. Then each questioned each other. Finally, the rest of the evening was given over to questions from the audience. The spirit of the Colloquy truly was honoring to the Lord. I especially want to acknowledge the manner in which Brian presented his case and interacted with me. He obviously is a God-lover and the evening was well worth it. I believe that I can say that all who were there profited by the give and take of the Colloquy.

In the future we hope to have more Colloquy’s. So, stay tuned to this station.

IMPLICATIONS OF NEW COVENANT THEOLOGY

Giving

  • Under the Mosaic Law of the Old Covenant the Israelites were required to give a tithe or tenth of their stuff to the Lord. Leviticus 27:30-33, Deuteronomy 14:22-29
  • In the nation of Israel the tithe was a holy tax.
  • Under the Law of Christ in the New Covenant era believers are not required to give a certain amount. In fact, believers are not forced to give at all. Each believer must decide for himself what he is to give. 2 Corinthians 9:6-11, 1 Corinthians 16:1-4
  • Under the Law of Christ believers are encouraged to be generous, but God determines no amount. 2 Corinthians 9:10-11
  • In the New Covenant era believers are motivated by a new heart to be generous. Titus 2:11-12

A LOOK BACK AT THE LONDON TRIP

On Monday, March 20 Paul Honeycutt and I left for London, England. Brad Woodlief joined us in England as he flew out of Raleigh, North Carolina. Together we spent the first few days in Oxford touring the “holy” sights of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. It was a bit cold and rainy but we soldiered on and had a great time. We did not miss the opportunity to visit some pubs and to eat at the famous pub “Eagle and Child” where the “Inklings” met each Tuesday morning to discuss their literary works.

Brad and Paul at the Eagle and Child while I took the picture.

We then moved on to the north of London to the “All Nations” Christian College where the NCT Conference was to be held. There were about 30 folks in attendance. They came from all over the UK as well as the Czech Republic and Italy. The conference began on Thursday evening and finished on Sunday morning. I loved the fellowship and thoroughly my times of teaching. Our desire is to do another conference next year and hopefully greatly expand those attending the conference.

We finished our time in the United Kingdom by taking the train on the afternoon of that final day of the conference to London so that Paul and Brad could have at least a few hours of seeing the sights. That was accomplished with much walking and a final closing meal at the St. George pub. The next morning we took off for the airport and our flights back home.

LONDON NCT CONFERENCE AUDIO

The conference audio is now available by going to the website http://www.exploringnct.org. My 5 times of teaching covered the following topics:

  • 1 Timothy 1:8-7 Understanding Law
  • 2 Corinthians 3 Understanding the Ten Commandments
  • Romans 7:1-6 Dying to the Law
  • Romans 8:14 The Leading of the Spirit
  • Galatians 4:21-31 Understanding the Old Covenant

IMPLICATIONS OF NEW COVENANT THEOLOGY

Holy Day

  • In the Old Covenant era there were special days that God called holy.  Exodus 20:8-11, 23:14-19
  • The 7th day of creation is set apart as a holy day to commemorate God resting from his work of creating, but there are no laws regarding our behavior in keeping this day holy. Genesis 2:2-3
  • In the New Covenant era, under the Law of Christ, there are no holy days. Romans 14:5-6, Colossians 2:16-17, Galatians 4:8-11
  • In the New Covenant era every day is holy. 1 Corinthians 10:31

Everyone who receives the IDS newsletter will also receive the new book portions, as they are available.

THEOLOGICAL COLLOQUY

Saturday, April 29

What is a Colloquy?

The 2nd definition of “Colloquy” from the dictionary on my imac computer states that a colloquy is “a gathering for discussion of theological questions.” The 1st definition is that it is a “conversation.”

Date and Time of Colloquy

Saturday, April 29

6:30pm to 9:00pm

(Nursery is not being provided)

Location

The Southeast Regional Library

775 N Greenfield Rd, Gilbert, AZ 85234

You can also pay by check by making it out to “IDS” and sending it to the IDS address (PO Box 3482, Gilbert, AZ 85299. You can also pay by cash at the door the evening of the Colloquy.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TRIP TO THE CAROLINAS

Priscilla and I first went to Greenville, NC where we stayed with Kirk and Linda Burtch and spent much time with Brad Woodlief and his wife Michelle. Brad is the IDS guy for the Carolinas. Brad is seeking to start a new church. We met with the folks one evening as well as with some key families on another evening. Brad did give us a treat by steaming some oysters one evening for dinner. Even Priscilla tried ONE oyster. The 2nd half of our trip took us to Myrtle Beach, SC where I taught at the NCT Conference on the subject of  “The Implications of New Covenant Theology.” There were about 30 folks in attendance and the interaction was wonderful and the fellowship was very special.

March 1

Here I am at the conference. At least you can see half the group.

March 2Brad Woodlief was the one who put the conference together.

IMPLICATIONS OF NEW COVENANT THEOLOGY

Land Promise

  • In the Abrahamic Covenant God promised to give to the Israelites the land of Canaan. Genesis 15:12-21
  • After Joshua conquered the land of Canaan it is stated that the land promise to Israel has been fulfilled. Joshua 11:23, 21:43-45
  • In reality not all of Canaan was conquered by Joshua, yet the land that he conquered fulfilled God’s promise to Israel. Joshua 13:1-5
  • Under the New Covenant the land promise to Israel is truly fulfilled by the promise of an eternal land given to spiritual Israel. Hebrews 4:1-11
  • The land promise in the Abrahamic Covenant was fulfilled in a temporary picture sense by the literal land of Canaan. The true fulfillment of this promise was eternal life promised to those who are a part of the New Covenant, the spiritual Israel.

CONTINUING PRAYER REQUESTS

  • That I would make much progress in finishing the book on “Picture-Fulfillment: a study in New Covenant Theology.”
  • I need to raise more funds for my normal living expenses.
  • I need more discipline in getting regular exercise.
  • I have a habit of saying “you know” and using it as filler in my conversation. I would like to eliminate that from my speech.

IMPLICATIONS OF NEW COVENANT THEOLOGY

Sword of the State

  • Under the Old Covenant the sword of the state, Israel, enforced the Mosaic Law.  Leviticus 20:10-16
  • In the Old Covenant era there was no such thing as a division of church and state since there was no such thing as the church. Israel as a nation was the unbelieving picture of the people of God. Deuteronomy 7:6-8, Hebrews 8:7-13
  • Under the Law of Christ in the New Covenant era the church has the responsibility to enforce discipline among believers. Matthew 18:15-20, 1 Corinthians 5:1-13
  • In the New Covenant era the civil government has a role to play but does not oversee the affairs of the local church. Romans 13:1-7

What a year it has been! Each one of our children had a baby this year. You can see from the pictures that there are now more grandchildren than adults. Each and every one of them are such a joy to Papa and me. It is fun to see how different each personality is. We were all together for a week, which was a blast, and I was very thankful for beautiful weather so the cousins could be outside playing! We were wall-to-wall babies and mommies tending to their needs in the living room which lead to great conversations while all that was going on. I was truly amazed at Gods goodness and faithfulness to us.

All four of our Sons remain with their current jobs. Thankfully they still enjoy and are challenged by their work. Geoff gets together with the guys once a month to study scripture and to encourage each other in their walk with the Lord which he loves. Zachary joins in via Skype. I am so encouraged to hear each of them desiring to love and lead their families in a way that would please their Lord.

Our daughters are all very busy taking care of babies but I hear them sharing with each other what they are learning in scripture or a recent blog or podcast that they’ve read or listened to. I am thankful that there is so much available to encourage them. These are very challenging times to be raising a family and Geoff and I pray often for the parents and for the salvation of each grandchild.

I look forward to see what God has in store for us this year. I know Geoff has new ministry opportunities coming up. He will be traveling more so I’d appreciate your prayers for him. He is also trying to get that book written which is no easy task for him. Talking comes much more easily than writing.

Again, I want to thank each one of you for your faithful prayers for us and for those of you who financially support us, thank you. God is so good and we want to continue to be faithful to use those funds in a responsible way.

As I look to the future, no matter what my Lord brings in to my life I want to be thankful and I don’t want to be fearful. This is a little song we sing in our fellowship that I go to when I’m tempted to worry.

Cheer up ye saints of God

There’s nothing to worry about;

Nothing to make you feel afraid

Nothing to make you doubt.

Remember, Jesus never fails

So why not trust Him and Shout!

You’ll be sorry you worried at all

Tomorrow morning!

This is a remarkable book that overwhelms you with Star Wars trivia and a comprehensive biblical analysis from the perspective of New Covenant Theology. This is a very well written book that is hard to put down. I recommend it to you.

IMPLICATIONS OF NEW COVENANT THEOLOGY

Holy Building

  • Under the Old Covenant God revealed himself uniquely to Israel through the physical structure of the tent of meeting, then the tabernacle and finally the temple.

Exodus 33:1-11, 25:1-9, 40:34-38, 2 Samuel 7:1-3, 1 Kings 8:1-13

  • Scripture seems to be quite clear that God does not “live” in a building. Within Israel God does uniquely make himself known through the holy place. Acts 7:48
  • In the New Covenant era God uniquely reveals himself through the individual believer who is called a temple of the Holy Spirit. He also reveals himself through the local church, which is also called the temple of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:19, 3:16
  • The tradition of calling the “meeting place” of believers the “sanctuary” is false and misleading since in the New Covenant era there is no such place. “Holy” buildings only belonged in the Old Covenant era.

SUPPORT FOR OVERSEAS TRIPS NEXT YEAR

I am now in the mode of trying to raise the necessary funds for the upcoming trips to Belarus and Romania. As always, do not feel compelled to give. I am convinced that this is a worthwhile opportunity and am asking my Father in heaven to fulfill my request. But whatever happens his Sovereign Will is unfolding and it is motivated by his love for me and is for my good.  Romans 8:28

Trip to Belarus in May

I need to raise about $2,000 for this trip.

Trip to Romania in August

I need to raise about $2,000 for this trip.

THEOLOGICAL DISCUSSION GROUP

Saturday, January 28

How do we handle Doctrinal differences?

The discussion group is from 8:00am to 10:00am at the home of Geoff Volker. Paul Honeycutt is going to be leading this discussion. All are invited to be a part on this theological discussion. If you desire to attend please notify Geoff Volker (geoff.volker@ids.org, 480.313.8558).

IDS Theological Discussion Group meets most every month on a Saturday morning at my place. The purpose of this group is two-fold.

#1 An opportunity for believers to be iron sharpening iron with one another so that we can make progress on our understanding of Scripture. Each meeting one individual leads an interactive discussion on a biblical topic that believers do not all agree on.

#2 To learn how to discuss biblical issues that we disagree on in a manner that honors the God of Scripture. 1 Corinthians 10:31
